Between horizons is a series of works on paper and canvas I produced during the first half of 2023. It started with experimentation using close colour relations but the paintings began to prompt associations with horizontal strips of sky, sea and land. The notion of horizons and landscape then took on a more metaphorical significance, suggesting analogies with the boundaries placed around peoples’ lives through war, occupation, or social norms.
I produced the paintings between January 1st and June 1st 2023, after which, when starting what I thought would be the next painting in the series, I found myself making quite different marks and using quite different colours. This signalled the end of the Between horizons series and the start of the next, at the time untitled, series.
